ROBERT Earnshaw will start a match for the first time this season when he plays for Cardiff City in tomorrow's Worthington Cup clash at Boston United.

Earnshaw, 21, returned from international duty in Finland fully fit and was told by Bluebirds manager Lennie Lawrence: ``You'll start at Boston.''

That's a welcome boost for Earnshaw, whose appearances so far this season have been limited to outings from the substitutes' bench.

He said today: ``I've scored one goal this season and I want more.

``I've been waiting for my chance to start and this is it, but I'm not going to try to force things to happen. I'm not fully match fit because I haven't been starting matches, but I can't wait to get out there.

``I don't mind who I play alongside. It will just be great to get out there with the team from the start.'' Earnshaw was among the substitutes for Wales against Finland and said: ``I was on the bench with Premiership players like Craig Bellamy and it was great to be involved.''

Football: Wright is wary of Boston.(Sport) - Liverpool Echo (Liverpool, England)

CHESTER City will aim to get back to winning ways when lowly Boston United visit the Deva Stadium in League Two tonight.

Despite losing on penalties to Chesterfield in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and then drawing at Bury in the FA Cup last weekend, City boss Mark Wright has been pleased with the way his side have performed over the past week.

'Chesterfield are in a division higher than us, so that was a creditable showing over there,' he said.

'When you consider that we played for over 20 minutes with 10 men at Bury, we can also take a lot of positives from that performance.

'We just have to eradicate the silly defensive mistakes.'

Boston are second bottom but the City boss isn't under-estimating the threat they pose.

He said: 'They are a big and direct type of side, so we will have to be strong.

'Sides managed by Steve Evans will always be competitive, but if we play to our full potential we should be okay.'

CHESTER CITY last night turned down an approach from fellow League Two side Boston United to take City skipper Stephen Vaughan on loan.

Boston currently only have 14 fit players available, and manager Steve Evans wanted Vaughan to join prior to their trip to Barnet this evening.

However, last night Vaughan turned down the proposed move. 'I am extremely flattered by the approach from Boston, but I am the Chester captain, and I am Chester City through and through. I want to be a part of the progress we will make this season.

'We have a great bunch of players here at the Deva, and while the results in the last few games haven't gone for us, when this new squad gels it will be a force to be reckoned with.'

Evans said: 'In my opinion the boy is excellent in a number of positions, and when I watched him recently, against a very good Wrexham side, he was outstanding.'

Chester are in action tonight when they entertain seventh-placed Notts County at the D eva .

City will be anxious to record a victory this evening, after a five game winless run which has seen them pick up just one point from 15.

Chester assistant manager Graham Barrow said: 'They have had quite a good start to the season, but we know we have to improve in the final third.

'The weekend defeat at Wycombe was disappointing, we all know the performance wasn't good enough, and we are keen to record a victory against Notts County. '

Football: Clare gets wish to join Boston.(Sport) - Liverpool Echo (Liverpool, England)

CHESTER City striker Daryl Clare is set to complete his transfer to Boston United today after the clubs agreed an undisclosed five-figure fee.

Clare, out of contract at the end of the season, joined City from Boston in the autumn of 2002, and was also the target of interest from Nationwide Conference club Carlisle United.

However, the player's desire to return to his Lincolnshire home, eventually meant that Chesterhad no option but allow the deal to go through.

City chairman Stephen Vaughan said: ``We will be sorry to see Daryl leave us, but the player expressed a desire to join Boston.

``We accepted an offer that was over 200 per cent less than the one offered by Carlisle, but it was a decision in the best interests of Daryl's family, and a way of us repaying the player for the goals he scored in our Conference championship season. ''

Clare scored 18 goals in his first season with Chester and his 30 goals in City's title-winning Nationwide Conference campaign were a major factor in the club regaining their Football League status after a four-year absence.

In another development, City's director of football, Ray Mathias, has left the club.
